… it was investigated how treatment outcomes are best measured and how various patient characteristics determine the outcome of conservative treatment. One study showed that supervised exercise therapy leads to increased physical activity in this sedentary population. Furthermore, this thesis revealed that implementation of supervised exercise therapy as first treatment, as opposed to invasively opening up the blocked vessel through percutaneous transluminal angioplasty, would lead to a cost-savings … All intermittent claudication patients should receive a trial of supervised exercise therapy before invasive treatment is considered. … This thesis investigated whether bone marrow derived stem cells and factors produced by stem cells (e.g. a protein called Annexin A1) could improve brain outcome in preterm stress models. The hypothesis was that the therapy modulates therapeutic targets that are less functional following preterm stress. Therapeutic targets are: 1) resident immune cells of the brain, 2) the barrier protecting the brain from the periphery and 3) the peripheral immune system. It was found that Annexin A1 is lost in the brain barrier upon preterm stress and protects brain barrier … A1, are an interesting candidate to further optimize in order to improve the lives of preterm born babies. … organization of the brain were explored between individuals by simulating the placement of a visual cortical prosthesis. Such a prosthesis can bypass the (broken) connections between the eye and brain in blind people, and potentially restore a rudimentary form of vision. Finally, new techniques were presented that show that visual perception and mental imagery are closely related, and allow for reading letter shapes directly from the mind. Together, this dissertation adds new foundations for the development of neurotechnological applications. Click here for the live stream. … explore prognostic value of the lymphocyte composition in the blood of MS patients. As this research was performed in a cohort receiving high-dose vitamin D supplementation, this thesis also aimed to further elucidate the effects of vitamin D in MS. Starting with vitamin D, certain genetic subgroups respond differently to vitamin D supplementation. As vitamin D shows a protective role in MS, this has implications for future trials.
