… 8,000 years ago, early farmers dispersed from Anatolia and brought agriculture and domestic animals to Europe. At the end of the Neolithic period, around 5,000 years ago, we find the first genetic evidence for another major migration event, when groups from the Eastern European pontic steppe, north of the black sea, entered the heartland of Europe. … selection of InScience International Science Film Festival in Nijmegen. Staff members of Maastricht University will introduce the films, and afterwards give a brief response to them and answer your questions. By the Throat Without noticing it, our group identity is revealed not just by our appearance, but also by our throats. Our pronunciation and phonation determine the region we belong to, as they are formed by our mother tongue. In By the Throat , filmmakers Effi & Amir investigate the way our voice forms our identity, thus giving us our own internal checkpoint. They show modern variations of the shibboleth, a language test that determines which group you belong to and nowadays decides whether you can pass a checkpoint in Tel Aviv or be given asylum status, but also determines whether someone is seen as a man or a woman. Introduction In her introduction, Assistent Professor Lauren Wagner will contextualize By The Throat by focussing on the scientific field of sociolinguistics. … Pepe the Frog was appropriated as a meme by alt-right and ultimately declared a hate symbol by the Anti-Defamation League in 2016. In 2015, Pepe became world-famous when Trump shared the meme and Hillary Clinton denounced the Frog. The documentary Feels Good Man shows Furie’s battle to reclaim his character. His friend and filmmaker Arthur Jones made a compelling documentary about this process. Feels Good Man offers a vivid, moving portrait of one man, one frog, and the very strange reality we’ve all found ourselves living in. After the film, Thomas Frissen will elaborate on how we predicate meaning to symbols and figures. Pepe the Frog was just a drawing, but the Meme Pepe the Frog becomes a powerful tool, appropriated by political groups. Historical, there are some similarities to other symbols, like the Swastika and QR-code. Dr Thomas Frissen is assistant professor at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASoS), Maastricht University. In both teaching and research Thomas …

… brains evolved to solve the survival problems of our Stone Age ancestors. How do we, using our primitive minds, survive in a modern information society and to what extent does evolution still influence our social behaviour? Mark van Vugt will look at group and organizational processes from an evolutionary psychological perspective. He will explore how humans came to be a group-living species, and which psychological adaptations enabled humans to successfully negotiate the various challenges and opportunities of group life. But these groups were relatively small and the problems were simple.
