General practitioners rarely record alcohol abuse in a patient's medical records. 'This is because many GPs fail to identify alcohol abuse in patients,' says PhD candidate Latifa Abidi from Maastricht University (UM).

From Apple's personal assistant Siri helping you out to Netflix recommending content for you, artificial intelligence and big-data technologies are increasingly affecting our daily lives. Is society prepared for the data revolution we are experiencing? And what will the data-filled world of the future look like? These questions are being explored on 26 January during Maastricht University’s 42nd Dies Natalis. Keynote speakers Sally Wyatt and Michel Dumontier share their thoughts on data in academia.  

 

L.W. (Louise) Verboeket LL.M., PhD candidate at the Department of Public Law of the UM Faculty Law, has been awarded the Jongbloed thesis prize on January 12^th. Her master thesis “The public prize. A study of the allocation of public funds by way of competition” is the best legal thesis written at Leiden University during the academic year 2016-2017. In 2017 Louise Verboeket graduated cum laude from Leiden University with a master’s degree in Constitutional and Administrative Law. Her thesis (and PhD) supervisors are prof. mr. J.E. (Jacobine) van den Brink and prof. mr. drs. W. (Willemien) den Ouden.

Scientists from Maastricht University (UM) and the University Medical Centre Groningen (UMCG) have managed to influence speech comprehension by sending electrical currents through the skull to stimulate the brain area involved in hearing.

The EU-wide General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will oblige companies to have a data protection officer, to inform authorities and affected individuals of security breaches, and to invest in data encryption and intrusion prevention and detection systems. This should improve the security of sensitive personal data – but it is important to remember that there’s no such thing as a perfectly secure system, according to Apostolis Zarras, cybersecurity expert.
