On 7 December 2023, the Globalization & Law Network had the pleasure of hosting a seminar with Dr. Panu Minkkinen, Professor of Jurisprudence at the University of Helsinki, Finland.

He knows everything there is to know about potatoes—he earned a PhD in the subject. Since then, the scope of Jan van den Berg’s work has widened. The new professor of Plant Envirogenetics studies the relationship between plant genetics, growing and storage conditions, and quality factors such as nutrients and taste.

At the CAPHRI research institute in Maastricht, a 5-member team led by Professor Hans Bosma is working on a large-scale study on socioeconomic inequality and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM). In this, they are looking at underlying factors such as the living and working environment of people with a lower socioeconomic status (SES) and to what extent these hinder a healthier lifestyle (and thus lowering the risk of T2DM). The first results were published recently on the influence of SES on the development of T2DM and the mediating role the psychosocial work environment plays. The team used data from over 8000 participants in De Maastricht Studie for their research.

SBE alumnus Paul Schraven reflects on his journey after Maastricht University School of Business and Economics (SBE). After a stint in management consulting, he co-founded SparkSupply in Berlin, connecting students to startups. Shifting away from this model, he worked remotely for a US startup, pursued an Entrepreneurship-focused Master’s, and eventually co-founded Packmatic. The company, focused on sustainability and digitization in the packaging industry, is currently in the middle of its Series A, with a team of approximately 35 members.
