During her Master's in Digital Cultures at the Faculty of Social Arts and Sciences, Nada Naguib participated in a unique collaborative digital museum project in the halls of Centre Céramique, Maastricht's city library and centre for art, culture and education. Initially a mandatory course requirement, the Maastricht Collection project evolved from a challenging task into a valuable experience in client work and teamwork while engaging with Maastricht's local history.

As a researcher, how can you best find out what a neighbourhood needs to improve the health and quality of life of its residents? Before you can enter into dialogue and roll up your sleeves together, public spaces are needed where researchers and residents can get together. In 2016, philosophy professor Klasien Horstman and her colleagues Mare Knibben and Sanne Raap launched UniversiteitmetdeBuurt (University in the Neighbourhood), including an initiative to create more meeting places in the neighbourhood. Here, Horstman shares her enthusiasm over the special collaboration between Maastricht University (UM) and residents of various neighbourhoods in northwest Maastricht.

Appropriate regulations and an international orientation are essential to prevent the devastation of education in Limburg, to maintain education standards and to train sufficient professionals for the tight labour market in the region and in the Netherlands as a whole. Since 2022, Limburg has been among the top 40 of Europe’s most innovative regions, according to the European Commission. To remain at the top and take advantage of new opportunities, education in the province needs to be strengthened. Limburg is calling for the scope and appropriate measures to achieve this. In a broad coalition, municipalities, province, employers’ and employees’ organisations, companies and Maastricht UMC+ are sending an urgent letter today to the education minister and to the parliamentary parties, including the possible partners in a future governing coalition.

David Baião Barata was born and raised in Castelo Branco, in eastern Portugal. His mother cooked typical Portuguese cuisine: hearty soups, lots of meat, everything doused in olive oil. It was only during his studies in cell and molecular biology in Lisbon that he began cooking for himself. And it was here in the Netherlands, during his PhD, that he discovered Portuguese wine. When it comes to cooking and eating, the key word for him is together.
