Educational systems are resilient systems, with technology functioning as an essential tool to overcome the shocks. The pandemic made educational systems realize they possess great capacity to overcome hurdles and create awareness that universities should use their potential to innovate. This blog focuses on some positive lessons learned from the pandemic for higher educational systems, stressing those characteristics and innovations that universities probably should consider in the post-pandemic. By looking at the positive outcomes, we do not mean to ignore that the pandemic was a very challenging period for humanity and overall negatively impacted higher education. Yet, the positive learnings may be most beneficial for institutions in moving forward.

When nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is used recreationally, its presence remains detectable in the breath and bloodstream for at least 60 minutes after inhalation, and the development of an instrument to measure it is technically feasible. These were among the findings of a study at Maastricht University, TNO and the Leiden University Medical Centre on the detectability of recreational nitrous oxide use among drivers and its impact on driving abilities.

Effective January 1, Ingrid Vermeer has been appointed CEO of Brightlands Campus Greenport Venlo. Vermeer has been the interim director since July 1, 2023, and is ultimately responsible for the further strengthening and expansion of the ecosystem at the Venlo campus, including real estate.

De campus in Geleen is eind mei gastheer voor de Brightlands Polymer Days 2024 met het thema 'To bond or not to bond?'. Een internationaal congres voor wetenschappers, studenten, bedrijfsleven en kenniswerkers. Twee volle dagen met presentaties van zowel gelouterde sprekers als jonge onderzoekers op het gebied van moleculen en materialen. Met workshops en volop gelegenheid om te netwerken. Jules Harings maakt namens Maastricht University deel uit van het zevenkoppige organisatiecomité. Hij verheugt zich nu al.

Founded 40 years ago, SBE started with only a handful of students and a motivated group of staff members experimenting with a new concept called Problem Based Learning. Since then, the School has grown to about 6,300 students and around 700 staff members, with education and research programmes in fields ranging from sustainability to econometrics to supply chain management.
