Mr Brian Melchior

I am a Junior Lecturer in the Philosophy Department at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, teaching a range of classes in the Global Studies, European Studies, and Arts and Culture programs. Previously, I completed an MPhil in History (with distinction) at the University of Cambridge and a BSc in International Relations (Cum Laude) at Leiden University.

My current research examines how Indonesia's first scholars of the humanities - philosophers, literary critics, and historians - established the foundations of their respective disciplines in the decades following their country's independence. More broadly, my interests lie in the fields of modern Indonesian history, postcolonial studies, and the history of the humanities in moments of postcolonial transition.
