Education

MILE builds and consolidates a cluster of high-quality and policy/research-based interdisciplinary courses and activities on EU migration law and governance. Our educational programs use both traditional teaching methods like lectures and more innovative approaches rooted in Maastricht University’s unique problem-based learning style. We also use experiential methods such as moot courts and negotiation simulations, along with interdisciplinary projects like those in the BA Global Studies program. We make digital resources available on our website, including online readings, social media updates, and event information. Additionally, we incorporate policy and research techniques like peer feedback, writing research papers and blogs, creating podcasts, and participating in discussion groups.

Courses

The Chair and her team are responsible for the design and delivery of a Master’s course on migration and asylum law part of the Law Faculty’s postgraduate curriculum. In addition, they convene a master thesis project on EU migration law and governance, and, design and co-deliver an interdisciplinary doctoral school.  In addition, the Chair contributes to two fully interdisciplinary Bachelor’s courses combining the disciplines of law, psychology, and economics co-convened as part of Maastricht University’s Bachelor in Global Studies.

MCEL thesis project

The Master thesis project on EU migration law and governance is a cluster supervision group combining 'peer feedback' techniques that complement traditional top-down supervision techniques. Within the cluster, the Action team will foster an environment of scientific discussion according to standards of excellence similar to those of other academic meetings so that the students can socialize in the process of creation and scientific interdisciplinary discussion by peers. Students will get access to a dedicated lecture component, peer feedback sessions, as well as individualised supervision sessions.

Apart from their graded master thesis (12 ECTS), students participating in the project will receive a certificate that will enrich their resume. After their completion and evaluation, selected theses will be published in the form of Jean Monnet/MCEL working papers (see below A4) to increase their scientific and social impact. The working papers will serve as a basis for the potential publication of further reworked drafts in scientific journals and their dissemination in the media. This activity will be open to students enrolled in Master programs of the Faculty of Law at Maastricht University.

Forthcoming in the academic year 2024-2025.

Interdisciplinary Migration Doctoral School

This annual two-day doctoral school aims to support PhD candidates working on migration law and governance research themes in advancing interdisciplinary and critical conceptual understandings, deepening their knowledge in doctrinal and empirical research methods, and reflecting on their own migration PhD journeys in the sense of refining their research topics and methodological approaches. This doctoral school features lectures by the Chair and her team, as well as external speakers. In addition, it features presentations by PhD candidates who will receive feedback by the speakers and their peers. The doctoral school engages each piece of research on its own terms, while at the same time inviting researchers to harness fruitful points of contact with a broad span of disciplinary approaches.
