D-NL-HIT

The main objective of the D-NL-HIT surface project is to introduce state-of-the-art development and testing methods (High Throughput) - and their accessibility for SMEs - making research into new substances much faster. By utilizing a large library of raw materials and combining them with efficient and reproducible handling methods, many samples can be screened in a short time.

D-NL-HIT is an Interreg V A project between different partners in Germany and the Netherlands

This process serves as the basis for the development of environmentally friendly alternatives to existing products, such as waterborne coatings and adhesives. In addition, the project includes work packages to optimize the 3D printing process and the modification of UV LEDs that are used in the curing process of materials. Maastricht University is involved in the development of biobased resins for waterborne and UV curable coating formulations to be tested on the high-throughput machine. Furthermore, machine learning will be implemented by Maastricht University and Hochschule Niederhein in order to fasten and support formulation developments. A huge amount of characterization data and advanced machine learning algorithms provide deeper insight leading to high quality results and innovative products strengthening the region for local and international markets.

Through the "Open Innovation & Dissemination" work package, SMEs have the option of joining the project later. For example, to train employees in the High Throughput formulation technology used or to test their own project idea together with other entrepreneurs and with the support of the scientific partners.

The lab of the High Throughput formulation will be located at the Hochschule Niederrhein in Krefeld, the lead partner of the project. With the help of field labs there is also the possibility to accelerate product development elsewhere.
