Jesús Reyes, alumnus MA Globalisation and Development Studies

Alumnus Jesús Reyes studied the master’s programme Globalisation and Development Studies. In our interview, he told us more about his experience with the programme and student life in Maastricht.

When we asked Jesús why he decided to study this programme, he told us: “I already had a background in development; however, I wanted to have a much broader perspective than what everyone talks about. I found this MA programme to be the perfect fit because it not only covered the various ideas surrounding development but also delved into how these ideas were formed and continue to evolve. Additionally, the programme stands out due to its global perspective. Unlike other programmes, this one values all perspectives. They are diverse, and each is important.”

Jesús told us also about his favourite courses: “My favourite courses were Global Connections: non-Eurocentric historical narratives and Theories and Histories of Globalisation and Development. I liked both subjects because I strongly believe that development can only be understood through various perspectives and that it holds a broad meaning worldwide. Both subjects highlight this point: the first by exploring its origins and the second by examining its consequences. This approach is extremely important for education today.”

Studying at FASoS and staying in Maastricht felt like one of the happiest moments of his life. "I remember the faculty with great affection, not only for the place but also for the people who are part of it. Additionally, the city is beautiful, quiet, and an oasis for students. I was able to visit many places and participate in various activities, from dinners to picnic days and community events. It's a fantastic place to enrich your social life and explore numerous people and places.”

Jesús still keeps in touch with his friends from FASoS. “Some friends have even visited me in Mexico where I currently live, and soon I will return to Europe to visit some more. The programme provided me with the opportunity to meet people with a wealth of experience and perspectives that are now a cherished part of my life.”

We also asked him about his current job. To this question, he answered: “I currently work as a strategy manager, focusing on sustainable development. Specifically, I provide consultancy services to large companies operating in both Latin America and Europe, advising them on social, environmental, and corporate governance aspects to enhance. Through analysis and projects, I guide them on the path to becoming sustainable companies over time.”

The master’s programme was crucial for his current career. “Currently, particularly in the corporate world, many people fail to grasp the origins of the concept of "sustainable development" and how they can contribute to it. From my standpoint, the programme has not only equipped me with the ability to elucidate and persuade others about its significance but also to elucidate how development is woven into a forward-thinking worldview that encompasses not only economic viability but also holistic equilibrium.”
