Inaugural lecture Prof. dr. Pieter Jelle Visser

Appointed professor of 'Molecular Epidemiology of Alzheimer's Disease'

Title of the lecture: "Amyloid in Alzheimer's disease: chicken or egg?"

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia. The disease is characterised by aggregation of the amyloid protein. Experimental treatment studies have focussed on aggregated amyloid. However, within the scientific community there is debate on the utility of aggregated amyloid as a treatment target. In my lecture I will summarise this debate and discuss the relevance of amyloid aggregation for treatment development.

Furthermore, I will discuss differences between individuals with Alzheimer’s disease. Molecular studies showed that there are several subtypes of Alzheimer’s disease that differ in underlying disease proces. This suggests that individuals with different subtypes may need different treatments.

Finally, I will discuss approaches to improve accessibility of existing data  such that large-scale studies on Alzheimer’s disease become feasible.
