Amira El Feky, alumna MA Globalisation and Development Studies

I applied to this programme because it comprised many topics I am immensely interested in. I was curious to learn about development theory, but also about the more practical aspects of development work. Furthermore, I had read about problem-based learning, the unique educational method used at Maastricht University.

I was also intrigued by the different graduation options at the end of the academic year, where one can choose between an internship, a desk study or field work.I chose to do field work in Cairo, where I researched the livelihoods of female street children. Doing research in the field was a great experience, and it added a lot to my (academic) understanding of a group of people I am so interested in.
In hindsight, I am very happy with the choice I made with regard to the university and this specific master’s programme. Although it was at times very challenging, the courses were extremely interesting. The diversity, in all terms, of the academic staff as well as my fellow students added to this positive experience.
Since I have graduated, I have been interning with a UK-based street children NGO. I have also had a few articles published, and I am currently working on an academic article with my Globalisation and Development thesis supervisor.
