CPD Workshop: The RACI Matrix: A workshop on roles and responsibilities

The RACI matrix is a helpful tool for assigning roles and responsibilities, distributing tasks and defining deliverables. Learn more and try out this tool for yourself in this workshop, relevant for UM board members, policymakers and educational supporters/managers.

The Boards of Examiners (BoEs) are expected to assure the quality of assessment, and in this way contribute to educational processes. In this role, they have to interact with various other stakeholders and to collaborate with other educational actors. These interactions might lead to conflicts and ambiguities: who is responsible for a particular task/process? How should the division of labour be organised? At what stage do we involve which party?

This workshop provides an introduction to the RACI matrix as a tool for the delineation of roles and responsibilities. We start with a brief explanation of the RACI framework and its origins and application to project management. Afterwards, the participants are invited to apply the tool to the assessment practices taking place within their faculties. In small groups, they have to delineate the role of the BoEs for several tasks: starting from basic and static and moving on to complex and dynamic (cyclical or year-long) processes such as the work on the Educational and Exam Regulations. Throughout the training, numerous examples are given from the practice of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASoS), which worked on a large-scale RACI matrix together with the Management in 2016-2017. The participants receive in-depth insight into various FASoS practical examples (the RACI charts) and the final product (the RACI memorandum).
