IPKM expert lecture by Francesco Mattina (Community Plant Variety Office) on EU Plant Variety Protection

In the context of the bachelor course IP in the Digital Single Market and the Intellectual Property and Knowledge Management (IPKM) master programme, we proudly present the expert lecture by Mr. Francesco Mattina on 11 October 2022, at 18:30 CEST in the Statenzaal, Faculty of Law. Abstract

The aim of the lecture is to provide an introductory overview of the Community plant variety Office in the framework of the international instruments to protect plant innovation by means of a sui generis intellectual property right, the plant breeders’ rights. The lecture will aim at clarifying basic notions, address the international IPR agreements dealing with plant varieties and plant breeders’ rights, compare it with the European Union model, explain the benefits of a PVP system and the challenges.

Speaker profile

Francesco Mattina, an Italian national, was appointed as President of the Community Plant Variety Office (CPVO) by the Council of the European Union in December 2021 and officially started his presidential duties on 1st February 2022.
