“Marianne van der Heijden (1922-1998). Het archief als bron van (kunst)historische herinnering” [in Dutch]

Keywords: Marianne van der Heijden, Limburg artist, exclusion, artistic archive, biography

Limburg artist Marianne van der Heijden left behind a remarkably diverse oeuvre. She rose to fame in the 1950s and 1960s for the monumental mosaics she created for the Catholic Church. The mosaics in the chapel of the Jesuits in Maastricht (now part of Maastricht University) are by far her most prestigious. She also made wall hangings, illustrations and paper collages. Despite her diverse career, she is not included in any overviews of Dutch art. This dissertation uses her legacy to explore the reasons for this and advocates a biographical approach within art history and the inclusion of artists' archives, such as this one, in heritage institutions.
