Grant value of 750,000 euro will stimulate lung research collaboration

NUTRIM researcher John Penders receives Lung Foundation Consortium Grant

John Penders (MMB) and fellow scientists at Franciscus Gasthuis & Vlietland, Erasmus MC and LUMC together received a Lung Foundation Consortium Grant. Together they will investigate how bacterial components might help in the prevention of respiratory infections in preterm neonates.

Because of their underdeveloped lungs and immature immune system, preterms have a high risk of respiratory infections and wheezing which can result in persistent respiratory morbidity. Within a randomized placebo-controlled trial the consortium will examine whether the supplementation of bacterial components can stimulate the immune system, prevent respiratory infections and improve respiratory health in this vulnerable group of newborns.
