Global Studies

As an alternative to Semester 5 “Peace & Justice” theme, students from the bachelor's programme Global Studies can follow one of the following minors in period 1 and 2 of Semester 5:

MinorFacultyECTS
Gender and Diversity StudiesFASoS24
EntrepreneurshipSBE26
SustainabilitySBE25
Art, Law and Policy MakingFoL/FASoS/FSE24

At this moment, these above Minors are pre-approved and can be selected. If you want to do another minor offered at Maastricht University, or one of the YUFE minors, the programme can assess the suitability of your desired minor within the broader Global Studies curriculum. Please email the Global Studies offices to request your minor of choice, with a clear justification of what this minor would add to your curriculum, how it differs from what is offered in GS, and how it complements other GS courses. You can find more information on the other minors offered when clicking on the options for other programmes (like European Studies, Digital Arts & Society). It is important that the minor you select would provide 24 or 25 ECTS in periods 1 and 2.

The minor and Human and Legal Decision-Making will not be offered, and due to the changes proposed to the minors International Law and Psychology, we will allow students to select courses that could replace this official minor instead. Should you be interested in this option, please send an email to GS office with a proposed combination of courses that will lead to  24 or 25 ECTS in periods 1 and 2. Please elaborate on how these courses will complement your GS diploma and why they provide a coherent knowledge package together. When suggesting a combination of individual courses, please check course requirements and prerequisites to ensure that you would be eligible to take each course. As a programme we will check these options and inform you whether the proposed combination of courses would be allowed. It is important to ask for this permission before registration for minors opens to ensure you will be able to register on time.

Please note: the application process for the academic year 2025-2026 takes place from 1 June 2025 up and until 30 June 2025 23.59 hours CET.

Please keep in mind that some minors have a limited number of available places.

How to apply for a minor:

  • Global Studies students will be asked to make a decision between “Peace and Justice” or a minor in periods 1 and 2 of semester 5. Students can submit their preferences for following “peace and Justice”, including field study destinations, or a minor before 12:00 on April 16th, 2025 via the Semester 5 Choice survey.
  • Students who indicate that they want to follow a minor will have to register for the minor themselves in the period of 1-30 June 2025. They can apply directly via the Special Course Request procedure of the Student Portal. Please choose all courses of the minor you want to participate in or mention the name of the Minor programme you opt for in a note.
  • Students can only participate in minors during periods 1 and 2. Students are required to participate in the Bachelor thesis proposal in period 3 and cannot take a concurrent minor.
