Webinar no.6: Phase out fossil fuels
The Maastricht Climate Coalition, a network of student and local organisations organises the webinar series ‘For a sustainable Maastricht’. Each webinar will address one of the eight specific requirements formulated by the climate coalition to make our city more sustainable and socially just.
Every 2 weeks, experts, activists and citizens, will come together online and discuss one of the 8 demands. Experiences, worries and ideas and imagine concrete solutions to local problems will be shared. What we will come up with together will be sent to our elected politicians.
The sixth webinar on 20 April is about fossil fuels. Currently 65% of the world’s electricity is being produced by fossil fuel industries. Governments have repeatedly promised to phase out fossil fuels, but delays keep occurring and real change is yet to come. If governments are not being pushed to achieve a greener economy, it remains questionable whether they will prevent climate change. So, what can we do about this? How do we achieve real change? Is activism a reasonable method? Are some of the criticisms on renewable energy sources valid?
We will try to answer these and other questions during this webinar. To help us, some professionals will join and provide their expertise.
