"Helping students become doctors:
analysing tensions and releasing opportunities in clinical workplaces"
This thesis shares insights from patients, students, clinicians, and educators, who have together helped us, understand more about how students learn to be doctors. This thesis set out to understand how students learn during clerkships, by conducting a series of research projects, which uncovered complex realities by attempting to change things. This thesis uses phenomenology and activity theory, identifying new possibilities for clerkship education and offering practical insights as to how these could be realised.
