“Haemodynamics in Deep Venous Obstruction”

Keywords: deep vein thrombosis, treatment, stents, quality of life

Each year, 1–2 out of every 1,000 people develop deep vein thrombosis.  Of the people who develop the condition, 25–56% suffer from chronic symptoms that reduce their quality of life, similar to that of diabetes and heart failure. While these symptoms can be treated with stents, this option is not covered by many insurers. This dissertation reveals that stents significantly reduce blood pressure, thereby improving both symptoms and quality of life. The study also found that a varicose vein on the abdomen wall is an easy, visible indicator of more severe pathology. As a result, treating varicose veins for cosmetic purposes can have serious consequences.
