Kompanía
You don’t need an education in ancient Greek or Latin or an evening course in modern Greek to enjoy the expressive vocals and the emotional layers in the songs performed by the relatively young group ‘KOMPANÍA’.
Just as fado is connected with Portugal, so rebétika as a form of music is closely intertwined with the bluesy Greek music that spread two centuries ago from Piraeus harbour, mainly through the circuit of café’s frequented by refugees. The five-piece group KOMPANÍA enjoys playing this originally underground music.
We are proud to present this group: a new generation of top-level musicians keeping rebétika music alive. Though they are an ‘all-star’ group, more importantly they are a real ‘band’, with lots of dedication, and stunning solo and harmony vocals (3 great voices), specialising in rebétika and smyrneïka, as well as dimóthika (traditional Greek folk songs). They gave very warm and impressive performances on their first tour of Holland and Belgium, in May 2012, which was a huge success. And they will do the same tonight!
