Empowering Public Voices

Introduction

Crucial revelations about abuse of power in recent years only became public due to insiders
blowing the whistle, leading slowly to changes in public perception and acceptance of
whistleblowing as legitimate means to hold power accountable. A new legislative wave is also
emerging to protect whistleblowers around the world, including at the European Union. At the
same time, many practical challenges are unresolved, political whistleblowers are outside the remit of
legal protections, and public understanding is still limited.

This one-day invitation only workshop on ‘Empowering Public Voices’ aims to bring together
leading scholars, experts, practitioners as well as whistleblowers in order to tackle the issue of
whistleblowing from a multi-disciplinary perspective and address both theoretical and practical
views. Its main purpose is to explore the latest thinking on the fundamentals of whistleblowing and
engage in discussions across a wide range of fields (law, political philosophy, ethics, management
and media studies) to understand the compound nature of whistleblowing, especially in the context
of global data and technology, the rise of anti rule of law movements and disruptive leaderships.
In light of your excellent work and expertise, I am delighted to Invite You to partake in this
workshop. Please see more details in the following pages about the program, confirmed speakers
and practical matters. I sincerely hope to have the great pleasure of welcoming you in Brussels this
upcoming September.
