Stephen Hawking and Thomas Hertog met nearly fifteen years ago in Cambridge and they have been on the same scientific wavelength ever since.

After his Master’s in Cambridge, Hertog was given the opportunity to complete his PhD in the field of cosmic inflation under Stephen Hawking. Afterwards, he worked at the University of California, Santa Barbara, in the United States, the Université de Paris VII in France and at CERN in Geneva. With Stephen Hawking and James Hartle, Hertog carried out work in the field of quantum cosmology and string theory.

Hawking's favourite subject of study is cosmology: the science of the universe as a whole. Hawking's goal, as he likes to put it, is to understand `why the universe is the way it is’.

In this lecture, Hertog describes the evolution in Hawking's thinking about our universe, and the place of mankind in the grand scheme of things. He explains how Hawking's ideas have revolutionised our understanding of how our universe began, and sketches the world view that arises from this.
