Chasing Ice

In 2005, the acclaimed environmental photographer James Balog heads off to Greenland, Iceland and Alaska, in order to capture images that will help to convey the effects of global warming.
Although Balog was initially sceptical about climate change, his first trip north convinced him of the impact that humans have on the planet and he became committed to bringing the story to the public.

Within months of his first trip to Iceland, Balog initiated ‘The Extreme Ice Survey’ - an expedition to collect data on the seasonal changes of glaciers. Balog and his team deploy cameras that use time-lapse photography across various places in the Arctic to record the world’s glaciers over several years. They are thus able to collect time-lapse photos that depict the drastic erosion and disappearance of enormous, ancient glaciers.

This film is planned in combination with the lecture by Prof. Jean-Pascal van Ypersele about Climate Change.
