Comprehensive Assessment of Maastricht University's Carbon Footprint
In line with global sustainability initiatives, academic institutions are increasingly prioritizing the reduction of their carbon footprints. This project aims to assess and quantify Maastricht University's greenhouse gas emissions, focusing primarily on Scope 1 (direct organizational) and Scope 2 (energy-related) emissions.
Drawing on methodologies from leading universities, we will benchmark existing practices to inform our approach. The assessment will follow the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology, in accordance with ISO 14040 and 14044 standards, ensuring alignment with the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol and other recognized frameworks.
While Scope 3 (indirect emissions) is acknowledged as a significant component of institutional carbon footprints, this research will initially concentrate on Scopes 1 and 2. A preliminary outline for Scope 3 may be developed as part of future work, contingent on project progress.
This project is executed in collaboration with SUM2030 and other units of Maastricht University relevant to the project.
