UM Climate Law Circle founded

In the previous edition of the Alumni Newsletter you could read that the establishment of a new climate law circle was explored. The UM Climate Law Circle is now a reality. The circle is an initiative of students, alumni and professors of the Faculty of Law of Maastricht University. Together they will look at how they can make the world around us a little bit more beautiful through (EU) climate law.

Maritje Weydemann and Audrey Danthinne are two Law alumni who are committed to the circle. Together with other students they were encouraged by their lecturer, Prof. Dr. Marjan Peeters, to set up the UM Climate Law Circle, after having followed her course on environmental law. Audrey Danthinne: “We see ourselves as the generation that needs to act now. The climate doesn't improve itself, we have to. Climate legislation is important in this regard. It is good to think about how we as lawyers can contribute to this.”

Knowledge
The European Union's objective to achieve climate neutrality by 2050 is important in this regard. Maritje Weydemann: “By working together as alumni and students with researchers and academics who specialize in climate-related legal issues, we can increase our knowledge. Together we can use this knowledge to take a critical look at climate legislation. Together you are stronger and you come up with better ideas”.

Interactive platform
They therefore want the UM Climate Law Circle to become an interactive platform where everyone feels free to connect and exchange experiences. The plan is to organize an event every three months. They want to invite climate law experts for presentations and/or panel discussions. Students and alumni can also share their research topics. The date of the first meeting will be discussed shortly.
