Non-Dutch students may work in the Netherlands during their studies. Please take note of several rules about health insurance, work permits, income taxes and social premiums to which you must adhere as a non-Dutch student employed in the Netherlands.
As a student, you will be required to pay tuition fees. How much you need to pay at Maastricht University (UM) depends on several factors:
- the study programme you choose
- whether you are going to study full-time or part-time
- whether it is your first or second bachelor’s or master’s programme in the Netherlands
- your nationality (whether you have EU/EER, Swiss or Suriname nationality)
The Dutch higher education system, and therefore also UM, uses two kinds of tuition fees: the statutory tuition fee and the institutional tuition fee. The institutional tuition fee is usually higher than the statutory tuition fee.
After you have registered for a study programme Maastricht University (UM) will notify you about paying your tuition fees. Please note that this notification does not mean you are officially enrolled at UM – you will receive a separate notification for that.
It is important that you pay your tuition fees on time. Below you will find more information about the deadlines for payment of the tuition fees.
You can pay your tuition fees in a lump sum or in instalments. You do this via a digital authorisation or via a bank transfer. You choose your payment method when you register in Studielink. If you have not done this yet, please go to your <My To Do list> in Studielink to complete this.
Please note: first-year students requiring a visa/residence permit for study cannot pay their tuition fee by digital authorisation or in instalments. They need to pay their tuition fee for a whole year in one lump sum by bank transfer before the start of their study programme.
Please make sure that you pay your tuition fee on time. See our webpage ‘When do you have to pay?’
You need a UM Graduation Statement completed by the school or university if you are not yet in possession of the diploma with which you qualify for admission to UM. Only the standard UM Graduation Statement will be accepted for admission.
A certified copy is a photocopy bearing an original stamp and an original signature from your secondary school or university. The stamp indicates that it is a genuine copy of the original diploma/grades transcript. You can get your diploma and/or grades transcript certified at your school or university, or at a notary or municipality. You can also take your original documents to the Student Services Centre (SSC); they can make a certified copy of your diploma and grades transcript.
'Mijn diploma's' ('My diplomas') is an online overview that contains details of diplomas, certificates and testimonials of Dutch programmes of study that are funded by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science. These details are linked to the personal details of the owner of the diploma. The overview is made available by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science to combat fraud.
