… Nederland de internationalisering van universiteiten aan banden wil gaan leggen. Hij maakte duidelijk dat de Universiteit Maastricht zich als internationaal en Europees zal blijven profileren. De Maastricht University School of Business and Economics (SBE) is al lange tijd een voorstander van internationalisering. In de jaren negentig was SBE een van de eerste faculteiten die begon met Engelstalige cursussen en uitwisselingsprogramma’s. Een van de wetenschappers die het voortouw nam bij de internationalisering van SBE was Professor Tom van Veen. We hebben met Tom gesproken om erachter … te blijven groeien, zou SBE zich moeten gaan richten op de internationale studenten die zich slechts een paar kilometer verderop bevonden, over de grens in Duitsland en België. Op hetzelfde moment dat SBE buitenlandse studenten begon te verwelkomen, startte de faculteit met financiële steun van de Europese Unie een uitwisselingsprogramma.
