Toric intraocular lenses (IOLs) offer an opportunity to correct … This dissertation evaluates the use of toric IOLs in patients with cataract and corneal astigmatism. In a randomised clinical study, we compared the use of glasses after bilateral toric IOL implantation to bilateral non-toric IOL implantation (control group). After toric IOL implantation, 84% of patients did not need glasses to see far away, in contrast to 31% in the control group. Voor deze methode is geen vlokkentest meer nodig, enkel een kleine hoeveelheid bloed van de zwangere en haar partner. Elke Mersy promoveerde deze week op haar onderzoek naar nieuwe vormen van prenatale diagnostiek. Ze ontwikkelde tevens een nieuwe genetische test voor geslachtsbepaling van de foetus tijdens de vroege zwangerschap. Deze kan worden toegepast voor het diagnosticeren van geslachtsgebonden erfelijke aandoeningen. Myotone dystrofie is een ernstige erfelijke spieraandoening, waarvoor geen remedie bestaat.
