“Toric Intraocular lenses in cataract surgery”

Keywords: cataract, corneal astigmatism, treatment, toric intraocular lenses, implantation

Approximately 20% of all patients with cataract also have a substantial amount of corneal astigmatism. Toric intraocular lenses (IOLs) offer an opportunity to correct corneal astigmatism during cataract surgery. This dissertation evaluates the use of toric IOLs in patients with cataract and corneal astigmatism. In a randomised clinical study, we compared the use of glasses after bilateral toric IOL implantation to bilateral non-toric IOL implantation (control group). After toric IOL implantation, 84% of patients did not need glasses to see far away, in contrast to 31% in the control group. Furthermore, we analysed several factors which may further optimise the outcomes with these IOLs.
