Brain Storm

The brain continues to excite us all, scientists as well as the general public. Not surprising, given the following two undisputed facts: 1) the brain is the most complex functional structure in the universe we know of, and 2) we all have one! In this series you will get to know your brain, and the storm that rages inside it every second of every minute of every day, from before you were born until the time of your passing. You will learn about your brain’s organisation, and its mechanisms of information processing. We will cover the neural bases for perception, emotion, action. What is thinking? And what are we? We will discuss how this brain came to be, and what it can do. We will also discuss how high-tech brain imaging and brain stimulation tools are being used to understand your brain. And what else can these methods do? Can they read our mind, by measuring our brain? What is the neural basis of consciousness, and do we have free will?

Our brains have created statues and statutes, skyscrapers and sublime art. It is a social brain. It is a smart brain. Perhaps it is time you got to know it...

The individual lectures:
1. Myths and Methods (16 Sep)
Debunking some brain fables, providing a solid foundation for a better understanding of the brain (brain basics) and how we study it in 2021 (brain tools).

2. Neurons to Networks (23 Sep)
Learn how the brain actually works! From the smallest information processing units to organised ensemble activity.

3. Perception and Action (30 Sep)
Understanding how the brain processes information from the world around us, reveals that the brain is a prediction machine.

4. Consciousness and Free Will (7 Oct)
Do we know the neural basis of our experience and humanity? Do we have free will?

5. Brain Reading and Brain Treating (14 Oct)
The range of realistic applications of brain imaging (brain reading) and brain modulation (brain treating) outside of science.
