Dat kan al tijdens de zwangerschap gebeuren, bijvoorbeeld door een infectie in het vruchtwater. … Maar ook na de geboorte kan schade ontstaan, onder andere door infecties of als gevolg van de beademing. “Door al deze gebeurtenissen hebben deze kinderen vanaf het begin minder reserves”, zegt bioloog en onderzoeker aan de Universiteit Maastricht Tim Wolfs. “Hierdoor kunnen zij sneller longziektes krijgen, zoals bronchopulmonale dysplasie (BPD) en chronische obstructieve longziekte (COPD).” Tot nu toe is er nog geen behandeling die de longschade bij deze kinderen kan repareren. Biologist Tim Wolfs is researching this with support from Longfonds (Lung Fund). The lungs of premature children are not fully developed. In addition, the lungs often suffer additional damage. This can already happen during pregnancy, for example due to an infection in the amniotic fluid. But damage can also occur after birth, including from infections or because of ventilation. 'Because of all these events, these children have fewer reserves from the beginning,' says biologist and researcher Tim Wolfs.
