For Kristian van Kuijk, an avid cyclist, it’s even led to a dream come true. He’s found an accurate way to predict the energy burned by a rider during a race. The algorithm has impressed … at Maastricht University and a passionate cycling fan. For his thesis, he has built an algorithm that makes it possible to predict the energy consumption of cyclists. These predictions are made through machine learning based on data such as the stage profile or the individual cyclist’s BMI. They also take account of much more unforeseen factors such as weather conditions or race tactics. Through KE@Work, Kristian got in touch with Team Jumbo–Visma, a leading Dutch professional bicycle racing team, …

The model can also handle uncertainty about preferences of the user it represents and derives a user model that best approximates a given user preference profile, specified only partially when the negotiation begins. In order to perform experiments using the model, we discuss a proof-of-concept prototype using an actor-critic architecture that uses deep reinforcement learning to estimate the strategy template parameters. To handle user preference uncertainty, we use stochastic search to derive the user model that best approximates a given partial preference profile. Our implementation also applies multi-objective optimization and multi-criteria decision-making methods as one of the bidding tactics to generate near Pareto-optimal bids during negotiation.
