… due to the changing symptoms. As a result, many patients with CECS will exercise less, resulting in reduced vitality and a lower quality of life. In order to recognise CECS more quickly, a number of predictive factors have been identified in a large group of 1,500 people with lower leg complaints (young, male, mutual pain, never before complaints of the lower leg, pressure pain over the affected lower leg muscles). It also appears that a simple questionnaire can distinguish the older CECS patient from the patient with a shop window leg. This dissertation also shows that a new surgical instrument (FascioMax) can treat CECS safely and effectively. Fac. … surgery, women have a higher mortality rate than men. The predictive value of risk factors for early mortality after a CABG (heart bypass surgery) is different for both sexes. Late mortality is also higher for women after a CABG, but if you equal both groups of men and women (the same number of risk factors) this difference is eliminated. This shows that being a woman is not a risk factor for death after a CABG. A so-called OPCAB (CABG without a heart lung machine) has a three times lower mortality … adjusting for these risk factors, survival is equal to that of men. The female sex is an independent factor for receiving blood transfusions after a CABG, more than twice as many. Fac. … impairments in physical or mental functions and disability, and the complexity of these types of neck pain are presented and discussed. The research concluded that clinical characteristics were differently associated with disability in both patient groups. Traumatic NP is a more complex condition as more characteristics interact, and the contribution of individual characteristics to disability is less straightforward. The findings of these studies contribute to a more thorough understanding of differences between subgroups of neck pain, the impact of neck pain on the daily functioning of people, and the use of accurate diagnostic instruments in primary care physiotherapy. … shade in a timely manner. Because very little was known in the area of sun protection for children, this study was conducted on sunburns, sun exposure, and the sun protection of children. This was done by interviewing parents and following a larger group of parents for three years in an online survey study. In addition, the effectiveness of existing sun protection interventions abroad was compared. All studies allow this dissertation to provide input for future sun protection interventions for parents and their children. Click here for the live stream. Fac. … finding was that for a patient who has had thrombosis, fewer tests are needed when thrombotic APS is suspected. In addition, this study was able to conclude that the diagnosis for APS depends partly on the laboratory test used. Finally, a specific group of aPL antibodies targeting prothrombin (an important protein in blood clotting) has been shown to activate platelets and potentially contribute to the increased risk of thrombosis in patients with APS. The results provide insight into the mechanism of APS that can contribute to choosing the right anticoagulants. Click here for the live stream. Fac. … bad decisions in health and education based on invalid research conclusions). This thesis deals with the design of two types of studies: surveys for mean estimation in multilevel populations (e.g. estimation of average alcohol consumption by students grouped in schools), and normative studies for estimating reference values for psychological test scores and questionnaires (e.g. to measure patients’ symptoms). Both types of studies are of practical importance: results from surveys can help … main objective of this thesis is to provide guidelines for planning both types of studies to achieve precise estimates using minimum resources. … vary greatly in their vulnerability to stress not everyone experiencing stress or worry develops Alzheimer’s Disease. Therefore within this thesis the relation between stress, worry and memory functioning is further investigated, by including a large group of adults with varying levels of worry about their memory performance. Additionally, the relation between worry and brain functioning during a memory task was investigated as a possible underlying mechanism. The results of this thesis contribute to a more accurate identification of individuals at risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. Click here for the live stream. Fac.
