After the training, those who had stopped smoking received €50, after three months another €50, after six months again €50 and after 12 months €200. After a year, some people had started smoking again, but there was a large different between the intervention and control groups (41% vs. 26%). This demonstrates that a quit-smoking group training at work will be more successful if combined with a reward in the form of gift certificates. … disease" Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is a widespread cardiovascular disease that causes pain and reduces the patient’s ability to walk. The first objective of the thesis was to investigate current treatment patterns for PAD by identifying groups of PAD patients with different treatment needs according to their cardiovascular risk and their probability of undergoing invasive PAD treatment. As a result, three groups were identified. The second objective was to measure the quality of life of patients with PAD who receive different kinds of treatment, which showed a positive effect of all treatments, and to measure the costs of these treatments. … in their professional development. During an individual meeting with a trained physician or professional coach physicians drafted a personal development plan for which they were intrinsically motivated. Third, it was investigated to what extent a group conversation with colleagues with whom physicians worked on a daily basis could serve as an alternative or supplement to individual meetings. Finally, the focus shifted from the individual physician in the context of his/her physician group to the physician group in the context of the wider organization. A new feedback tool was developed and tested to evaluate physicians’ group performance. Click here for the full dissertation. Fac. … healthy lifestyle are more susceptible to lung problems and have a greater risk of COPD. Jos Dirven: "My dissertation is based on the development of efficient strategies for general practices to detect COPD at an early stage. That is why I actively started looking for COPD in "healthy" people. About 10000 people between the ages of 40 and 70 were sent a questionnaire (8 questions) by mail. The survey found that approximately two-thirds of these "healthy" people reported complaints but had never consulted a doctor. Lung function measurements (spirometry) often revealed COPD in this group of people. This is particularly alarming because COPD is predicted to become the third leading cause of death in Europe by 2020. I want to call on politicians and policymakers to financially support the infrastructure so general practitioners can … people filling out the questionnaires and many new cases of COPD being diagnosed. Other research shows that the number of lung attacks decreases among known COPD patients who get medical treatment. As a result the costs of direct health care for the group known CPOD patients in the end are less than for the group unknown COPD patients. However, follow-up research will need to determine the extent to which early detection of COPD actually leads to lower costs. This research has been facilitated by …

… Keywords: COPD, treatment, physiotherapy This dissertation found physiotherapy to be the most important intervention for COPD patients. Despite encountering several obstacles in the original research design, it can be concluded that the treatment group experienced significantly fewer, shorter, and less severe exacerbations than the control group. Other results included lower costs for society and better quality of life for COPD patients. Interestingly, 90% of COPD patients also suffer from one or more non-related diseases. This study also described the effects of secondary disorders on …

… urinary incontinence, does it bother?" Pregnancy-related urinary incontinence is very common and will not resolve by itself in many cases. Pelvic floor muscle exercises are an effective treatment option with equal effectiveness in individual and group therapy. However, uncertainty exists about the effect of pelvic floor muscle exercises in a group for pregnant and post-partum women with urinary incontinence. In the motherfit study, the effect of pelvic floor muscle group therapy for peri-partum women with urinary incontinence is compared with usual care. In addition, more precise data … incontinence and help-seeking behaviour, peripartum women and health care professionals were interviewed. Click here for the full dissertation. … on in Limburg over the past eight years. For this purpose, the ACCORD methodology has been developed, in which everyone is systematically consulted in advance, before the content of the care is prescribed. The ACCORD methodology can be used for any group of healthcare providers who want to reach a broad-based agreement. Additionally, the following has been investigated: 1) how well representation works if a group sends someone on its behalf to make decisions; is the group’s opinion well represented, 2) which factors, in addition to risk reduction, play a role in assessing risks and introducing interventions, and 3) which factors influence patient satisfaction related to obstetric care. … Co-supervisor: dr. E.K. Bijlsma (LUMC, Leiden) Keywords: intermediate repeat, disease onset, late-onset, paediatric "Controversies And Pitfalls In Diagnosing Huntington’s Disease" Huntington's disease is an inherited disorder characterised by involuntary movements, as well as psychiatric and cognitive disorders, that occur on average between the ages of 30 and 50. The diagnosis is made on the basis of the motor characteristics of the disease. The diagnostic confidence level, or the extent to which the researcher thinks that the characteristics fit the disease, is used for this. This research shows that this scale is not a reliable instrument for determining the onset of the disease. A small group develops the disease during childhood (paediatric Huntington's disease).
