Suspending your studies

During your academic journey, whether it’s between your bachelor's and master's programmes or at any point within them, you might find yourself considering taking a break from your studies. Taking time off can be incredibly enriching, offering opportunities to travel, volunteer, immerse yourself in a new culture, or develop specific skills and competences. But there are some things you should consider first.

What to consider before suspending your studies

Before you decide to temporarily suspend your studies, you should consider the following:

  • Your registration at Maastricht University: Whether and when to terminate your enrolment depends on the reason you are suspending your studies and de-registering as a student.
  • Student financing: Once you de-register as a full-time student, even if it is temporary, you are no longer entitled to financial support or your student travel product. You will therefore need to find another way of supporting yourself financially.
  • Future student financing. It is also wise to look how suspending your studies might affect your eligibility for future student financing.

Before making any decisions, it is crucial to explore these aspects thoroughly. You can find detailed information and guidance through DUO (Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs).
