Extra money for unexpected discovery
When during research you come across results you didn't expect, sometimes you can't do anything with them. After all, this was not in the research plan. To still work out those unexpected discoveries, seven projects are now receiving a small top-up of up to 30,000 euros per project thanks to NWO's Impact Explorer call. Elia Formisano of Maastricht University is one of the lucky ones.
From lab to reality
With his project, Formisano seeks to bridge the gap between groundbreaking neuroscientific research and practical applications by exploring the societal impact of AI algorithms inspired by brain function, specifically designed for sound recognition. A multidisciplinary team, including experts in translational and user-oriented activities, adopts a systematic approach involving preliminary research, design thinking sessions, deep dive analysis, and post-deep dive actions. The collaboration with the Brightlands Institute for Smart Society (BISS) aims to identify concrete use cases and potential partners. The exploration plan, detailed over a six-month timeline, emphasizes engagement with stakeholders, development of prototypes, and a comprehensive communication strategy.
