"Together We Stand: The Impact of Gender Equality in the Workplace on Employees and Firms in the Netherlands"

This thesis examines wage inequality within and between male and female dominated occupations, the impact of gender diversity within firms on employee health and wellbeing outcomes and on corporate financial performance. Additionally, the importance of firms presenting themselves as gender equal on social media is evaluated on their market valuation. This thesis uses a mix of data from population registers, tax registers, surveys and publicly available data, such as Twitter (now X) and sustainability reports. The results show that the labour market in the Netherlands is gendered and that this negatively affects the income of women. They additionally indicate that gender diversity has a positive impact on corporate financial performance, especially when this diversity is present throughout all layers of the company and when gender wage inequality within the company is low. Finally, firms are punished in their stock price for presenting themselves as gender equal when they are not.
