Dealing with anxiety and stress in light of COVID-19

Join our interactive talk show, Thursday 19 March 13:00 CET

Omgaan met angst en stress tijdens de COVID-19 pandemie

The novel coronavirus has a long list of terrifying characteristics, spurring people from Japan to Europe to the US to engage in panic buying, devour news coverage, steal hand sanitiser and face masks. Many fret that a throat tickle might mean a fatal illness, enter prepper mode or otherwise succumb to COVID-19 anxiety.

COVID-19 distress has reached such levels that the World Health Organisation on Tuesday issued guidelines for protecting mental health during the outbreak. “Avoid watching, reading or listening to news that cause you to feel anxious or distressed; seek information mainly to take practical steps to prepare your plans and protect yourself and loved ones,” the advice reads. “Seek information updates at specific times during the day once or twice. The sudden and near-constant stream of news reports about an outbreak can cause anyone to feel worried.”

You'll find the streams on three channels:

1. Facebook
2. Instagram
3. YouTube

All of this has not gone unnoticed by the student community of Maastricht University. In this live chat, we talk with experts and students about their fears and how to cope with the anxiety and uncertainties this situation brings with it. Viewers will have the opportunity to put their questions to professional coaches and psychologists. If you have any questions before or during the livestream, please send them to us via email: join-us@maastrichtuniversity.nl

The online information session is hosted by UM master’s student Steff Nagel.

Guests:

Liesbeth Mouha, psychologist at the UM Student Services Centre

Prof. dr. Koen Schruers, psychiatrist and neuropsychologist at the School for Mental Health and Neuroscience

Frenk Peeters, MD, PhD, Professor of Clinical Psychology at the Department of Clinical Psychological Science
