Plastic Diamond

Plastic Diamond project aims to transfer the synthesis of a weekly-entangled (disentangled) Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) to industrial level and expand its applications.

UHMWPE has immense benefits in the field of high performance applications thanks to its superior mechanical properties (Tensile strength exceeding 4 GPa, Tensile Modulus over 200 GPa, Impact Strength exceeding 90 kJ/m2) coupled with a very low coefficient of friction, chemical and UV inertness and good thermal conductivity. The technology proposed has been demonstrated in the lab scale achieving a technology readiness level of four. However, the upscaling of the lab-tested technology to industrial conditions is necessary. The project aims to investigate such possibilities.
