Cees van der Vleuten receives Tans Medal
During his farewell lecture on 20 January, Professor of Education Cees van der Vleuten, who is to officially retire on 6 April, has been awarded the Tans Medal (Dr. J. G. H. Tans Medal), UM’s highest distinction honouring those who have made a significant contribution towards the development of the university.
During a long and impressive career at Maastricht University, Cees van der Vleuten has made extraordinary contributions to the development of both student-centered higher education in Problem-based Learning and student assessment, a field in which he was a pioneer.
Van der Vleuten’s career at UM began in 1982. In 1996, he was appointed Professor of Education at the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences. He served as chair of the Department of Educational Development and Research and director of the School of Health Professions Education (SHE). In addition to acting as a mentor for countless researchers in education, he has supervised more than 90 doctoral students.
Among his numerous academic awards are the John P. Hubbard Award for significant contributions to research and development of assessment of medical competence from the National Board of Medical Examiners in the US and the Karolinska Institutet Prize for Research in Medical Education.
