Mira’s paper focused on the trends and determinants of investor citizenship schemes around the world between 1980 and 2018. In her paper, she identifies how many states have ‘citizenship-for-sale’ programmes and statistically examines the characteristics of states introducing such schemes. Mira uses a new global and longitudinal dataset that builds on research done in the context of the Honours Seminar led by professor Maarten Vink in the academic year 2018/2019, which investigated investor citizenship. Mira currently conducts a research internship at the Max-Planck-Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity in Göttingen where she works together with professor Ayelet Shachar, a globally recognised expert in the field of citizenship studies.

The Global Citizenship Observatory (GLOBALCIT) is a web platform that is part of the Global Governance Programme at the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies at the European University Institute, co-directed by Rainer Bauböck, Jo Shaw and Maarten Vink. GLOBALCIT provides user-friendly open access to a major worldwide collection of data and analyses on citizenship laws and access to franchise for academic researchers and policy communities. This year’s GLOBALCIT conference hosted scholars from comparative political science, normative political theory, law, and history. The overarching topic invited scholars to explore the instrumental and identity dimension of citizenship for both states and individuals in the 21st century. Papers addressed the populist challenge to constitutional citizenship; the relationship between a state’s immigration and emigration policies; dual citizen’s disqualifications from the Australian parliament; access to citizenship for vulnerable groups and the practices of investor citizenship.
