Faculty of Science and Engineering - Self tour

Welcome to Paul-Henri Spaaklaan 1, or PHS. Today you are taking a self-tour through Maastricht University’s Faculty of Science and Engineering (FSE).

You are now at the main building of the Faculty of Science and Engineering, located in the Randwyck neighborhood of Maastricht. FSE is home to several outstanding departments in education and research. Students and scientists contribute to education programmes at the bachelor's, master's and PhD levels and take part in innovative research in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

The PHS building houses 9 innovative science programmes, and is also home to administrative offices, such as the office of the Dean and Director of FSE. This faculty building is divided into two sections, the B (north) and the C (south) towers. In the flat part in between, you will find the main entrance, the reception desk, and the coffee corner.

How does the PHS self-tour work?

Multiple QR codes are spread out in several hallways/locations within this building that we invite you to discover. Scan the QR codes and find out more about the facilities and offices in this building. Please note that this is a self-tour, meaning that at this moment in time, you will not be able to be personally guided through the building or to walk into any of the administrative offices.

If you're a prospective student for one of the programmes below, focus on the B tower; ground, first and fourth floor.

  • BSc Maastricht Science Programme

  • BSc Circular Engineering

  • MSc Imaging Engineering

  • MSc Systems Biology

If you're a prospective student for one of the programmes below, focus on the C tower; ground, first and second floor.

  • BSc Data Science & Artificial Intelligence

  • BSc Computer Science

  • MSc Artificial Intelligence

  • MSc Data Science for Decision Making

Now it’s time to show yourself around!

Ground floor

Main entrance

The main entrance of this building is located at the address Gaetano Martinolaan 10, whereas the entrance leading to the (student and staff) bike and car park (staff only) is located at Endepolsdomein.

Reception desk

By using the main entrance you will immediately see the reception desk on your right. During opening hours (08:00 till 19:00 on weekdays), a staff member will always be at your disposal to answer general, non-study related topics.

Coffee corner

When you use the main entrance of the PHS building, the first thing you will see in front of you is the PHS Coffee Bar Corner where staff and students grab a bite and something to drink. Around noon, this place is swarming with hungry students and staff members.

Learning spaces

At the heart of PHS, between the two towers, you will find the PHS Learning Spaces; 300 dynamic study places that are always at your disposal. It’s an inspiring and versatile space accessible for everyone in the UM community; so chances are that you meet students from other faculties.

If you need a secluded private study space, you can make it your own by moving the curtains. You have a lot of interactive study spaces as well, to meet up with your group. There are even some whiteboards you can use to visualize your ideas. The whole space is filled with movable blocks, so the learning spaces can also become a multifunctional space for events.

As you can see, the set-up ensures cosy, yet spacious study spaces for students. You will definitely enjoy spending time here!

Lecture halls

B0.010 | B0.014 | C0.016 | C0.020

As Maastricht University prioritises small-scale learning, you will spend most of your time in PBL- sessions, PCL-sessions or hands-on lab experience. However, some topics require a lecture format. This is why we have several traditional lecture halls located on the ground floor of the building. These are used for all study programmes housed in this building, as well as for occasional guest lectures or events.

Office of Student Affairs

B0.005

The Office of Student Affairs will help you with anything you may need to organise your studies and advises you on registration and enrolment, visas and insurance. Do note that each student affairs office (different per department) has its own walk-in hours during which you can ask your question in person. Of course, you can also reach them over the phone or via email.

Skills and projects Lab MSP

B0.009

On the ground floor of the B building, you will find the Skills and projects lab of the Maastricht Science Programme (MSP). Here you will do practicums and gain hands-on lab experience in biology and physics.

Upper floors

Study associations

B1.017 | C1.003

The FSE bachelor’s and master’s programmes have their own study associations; a community that aims to enhance student life through events, organisations and study assistance. These associations also offer networking opportunities with like-minded students and industry professionals, including workshops that enhance your social, professional and technical skills. You are very welcome to join your programme’s study association and get to know your classmates a bit better.

Office of Student Affairs

C1.006

The Office of Student Affairs will help you with anything you may need to organise your studies and advises you on registration and enrolment, visas and insurance. Do note that each student affairs office (different per department) has its own walk-in hours during which you can ask your question in person. Of course, you can also reach them over the phone or via email.

Study advisers and academic advisors

At Maastricht University, students can seek guidance from a study adviser or academic advisor to discuss their personal growth and future plans. If you want to enhance your study experience, align your extracurricular activities with your personal development goals, or if you find it challenging to balance personal circumstances with academic success, a study adviser can help you develop your talents and skills. Together, you can explore ways to enhance your academic journey.

Common rooms

B1.016 | B4.010 | C1.002

Every department within our faculty has its own common room where students and staff meet and mingle. In between classes, you might want to come to one of the common rooms and hang out for a bit with fellow students. It’s a great place to have lunch, have a conversation or play a game.

Tutorial rooms

Scattered throughout PHS, we have tutorial rooms where you will participate in PBL-sessions (Problem-Based Learning) or do some quiet studying, alone or with a project group. Most of our tutorial rooms are located on the upper floors of both the North and the South towers.

Computer room

C1.005

This computer area of the Department of Advanced Computing Sciences offers some 60 places for students to do computer or programming work.

Living Lab/Swarm Lab DACS

 C2.028

If you're a student at the Department of Advanced Computing Science, you will often find yourself in this area of the building. In the robotics lab you will learn about engineering and programming.
