The Gig is Up

From food deliveries and ride shares to tagging images for AI, millions of people all over the world are finding work task by task online. And yet the stories of the workers behind this tech revolution have gone largely unnoticed.

The Gig is Up brings the story of this shadow workforce into the light. Lured by the promise of flexible working hours, independence and control over time and money, workers from around the world have encountered a very different reality. Working conditions are often dangerous, pay can change without notice and workers can be fired through a bad rating.

This very human tech documentary reveals the true costs of the platform economy, through the lives of people around the world working for companies like Uber, Amazon and Deliveroo.

After the screening Wendy Smits, Professor of Labour Market Flexibility at the School of Business and Economics, UM, will put the gig economy in the broader context of developments and trends in labour market flexibility.
