"Chemsex among men who have sex with men; a public health and user perspective"

This research is about chemsex among men who have sex with men (MSM). Chemsex is a term that is used to describe the use of drugs before or during sex. The prevalence of chemsex among our study population, MSM visiting Dutch STI clinics in Limburg, was 35%. Chemsex has been associated with an increased risk for sexually transmitted infections (STI) and an increased risk for dependency, anxiety and depression. A negative impact on daily life is often used as an indicator for these mental health issues. In our study, one in ten men reported a negative impact on their daily life. We used a participatory approach to ensure that study results are relevant and useful for possible action on healthcare policy and practice. One multidisciplinary healthcare response resulting from this thesis was an information brochure based on the healthcare needs of MSM practicing chemsex and training needs of STI healthcare workers.
