"Organ donation education - Vital for promoting active registrations"

Low organ donation registration rates remain a public health challenge in many countries, including the Netherlands. This research describes the adaptation, implementation and evaluation of a school-based interactive educational programme about organ donation. This programme was implemented in schools for vocational education. The results show possibilities to reach a large group of adolescents and increase registration rates in this group.

The new donor law in the Netherlands has the potential to contribute to higher registration rates as well. However, the complexity of the new law could impact people’s decision-making and registration behaviour, especially among lower-educated people. More efforts are needed to proactively reach affected groups.
