The Proof of the Pudding

The celebrated architect Herman Hertzberger is still active at the age of 90. His most iconic building, ‘Centraal Beheer’ in Apeldoorn, from 1972, is being transformed from abandoned office premises into a modern, sustainable place for living, working and recreation. Hertzberger calls this transformation ‘the proof of the pudding’, as his structuralist ideals from the 1960’s and 70’s already intended buildings to be flexible and sustainable, and thus able to withstand a modern transition. But is the current climate still receptive to his vision? What prevails today: lucrative square metres or space for people? This is a film about the changing spirit of the times and the role architecture plays in it.

Dr Brigitte le Normand will give an introduction to the film. She is associate professor at the the History department of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Maastricht University. She is an expert in urban planning and has done extensive research on the topic of city planning, and how architectural choices are often tightly linked to ideals about how a society should function.
