“Perinatal factors and hearing outcome”

Keywords: chorioamnionitis, asphyxia, hearing, MRI, inner ear

This dissertation researched various perinatal factors that can negatively influence hearing outcome in children. The study examined the link between uterine infections and hearing in an experimental animal model and in a population of children who were born prematurely. It also examined whether the administration of anaesthetic medication during birth helped to reduce the damaging effects of oxygen deprivation on hearing. Finally, the value of high field magnetic resonance imaging was evaluated to accurately assess the miniscule structures of the inner ear. This study aims to further optimise the care surrounding birth in order to offer the best possible protection against hearing damage later in life.
