Living with water in Limburg

Frans Timmermans in conversation with youth from Limburg on climate adaptation

The floods and excess water caused great suffering and damage to residents of Limburg and the Meuse basin in the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium in July 2021. The water caused fatalities in Belgium and Germany and throughout the affected area, homes became uninhabitable and many businesses and retail premises suffered extensive damage

Two years after these events, on Saturday 15 July 2023, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission Frans Timmermans will visit the municipality of Valkenburg aan de Geul, one of the hardest hit areas in Dutch Limburg.

As the person responsible for the European Green Deal—a set of ambitious goals to become climate-neutral and protect the environment - he will discuss with young people from Limburg how they can play a role in climate adaptation so that we are better prepared for future floods. Earlier that day, Timmermans will visit affected areas in Belgium and Germany.

This event takes place in Dutch; it is moderated by Job Zomerplaag, programme maker with Studio Europa Maastricht.
