Contested History Event

Aline Sierp and Lorena Ortiz Cabrero (Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences) are organising the first event of the Contested Histories project funded by the European Commission.

The event will take place on 1 July and is about the Warsaw Uprising Museum. The museum is known for its narration of the 1944 Warsaw Uprising and the violent context of the Second World War’s Eastern Front. Participation is free and open to the public.

Contested Histories Onsite is a joint project between the Memory Studies Association and EuroClio, funded by the Europe for Citizens programme from the EC. The project aims to use historical sites representing past totalitarian regimes as a starting point for discussion with citizens about the importance of pluralism, civic rights and democratic practices.

A lecture will be given by Dr. Maria Kobielska (Jagiellonian University’s Faculty of Polish Studies) about the origins and agenda of the museum, as well as criticisms of the museum from a variety of perspectives in the 15 years since its opening. After the lecture, Dr. Marcin Napiórkowski (University of Warsaw’s Institute of Polish Culture) will take us on an interactive virtual tour of the site. His tour will detail how the museum creates an immersive experience using the ‘time machine’ method and sensory stimulation before coming to the controversy and ethics surrounding the museum.
